"A BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT PATEL COMMUNITY"

Patel / Patidar is one of the lively, happy & respected community of Gujarat. Its very Interesting to know about their history. Main Patel / Patidar includes Matia, Leuva, Lalchuda, Kadva, Anjna etc. are the main sub-caste of Patidar today. So Its very interesting to Know about their Natives, Origins etc . From where they came ? Where the went ? And why did they get divided ? This all details could be Known From (Barot) One who keeps the details of every family. One belief is that Gujarat Patidar’s belongs to the Aryans. It is believed that these Aryans were living in central Asia near Aayu river in the Pamirs region. From there one group went to Europe , Second went towards Iran, & Some of them came to Punjab Via Afghanistan, & then they divided throughout India. So today’s Patidars were Kshatriya in 2500 B.C. when they use to reside in Punjab. In B.C. 2000 God Rama’s son named Luv & Kush defeated the king of Punjab and maintained peace. There were two region known for Luv & Kush . Luv region was known as Leuva and Kush region was known as Karad.

Today’s Patidars were used to stay there and were known as Kurmi Kshatriya. Today’s Patidar are not directly an creators of Luv & Kush. But those who came from Leuva region are Known as “ Leuva” and those who came from Karad region are Known “Kadva” So native of Karmi was the Punjab & from their they came to Northern India through Mathura, Kota-Mundshur by Siddhpur & Vadnagar, from there they went to Jaipur of Rajasthan to Patanwada, Adlaj to Saurashtra, Kutch & finally to Southern Gujarat. After all they used to distribute all over the villages of Gujarat. So from word “Kurmi” they were known sa kunbi & Finally they were known as “Kanbi”

Through Second belief it is said that Patels from Origin of Punjab region through Malwa came to Gujarat. Patel's an caster immigrated from Punjab around 1000 A.D Because Afgan King captured Punjab and used to torture their Punjab, Including forceful to follow their religion, they also Raped women So, many of them had committed Suicide & remaining were forcefully made muslim and were force to marry as Islam religion. So to protect them self from all this harassment they immigrated from Leva & Kadva region of Gujranwala of Punjab

Province. Today Gujaranwala is a part of Pakistan. Till today Kanbi community is present. From Punjab they traveled by bullock carts with their things to king Bhoj's Malva. They stayed there for short time and started their Journey towards Khambat of Gujarat. At that time Gujarat was ruled by Solanki's. They asked King of Khambat for Shelter & King Happily gave land about a village area to every Kanbi. But the King asked to give 12% of their crops . but the recovery cost became very high. So king appointed a head and gave him power of Pat , & that person was known as " Patlik" after lapse of time it was known as Patal & finally "Patel"

After the Maurya ruled in 1300 to 1400 A.D. The king of Delhi Allaudin Khilji captured the Gujarat. the farmers were selfishly ruled by Khilji for period of 15-20 years. In ruling period of Mohammed Begda the condition of farming and farmers were Improved during 1500-1600 A.D. . Now the rule of recovering 12% crop was rubbed out & the farmer were given power forever. so they were known as Patadar and as time went they were known as Patidar . In 1600 Akbar captured Gujarat from Todarmal ,and was asked to Measured the land and he tied a tax known as "Vigoti" and today its known and Mehusool. In farming farmer's started becoming rich but as population increased the land were distributed among the family members and again they became poor. Now they decided to Immigrate from there. So in this way Leuva of central Gujarat immigrate to south Gujarat. In 1430 A.D. the fall of Champanar started at this time Patidars of Champanari's immigrate to Vadodra, Surat, Bardoli, Navsari & Valsad.

Round about 1820 - 1830 A.D. Today's Surat Region was dense forest. Leuva who came from charotar cleaned these forest & made this land suitable for farming and stayed there forever. they slowly cut their term with charotar. because of lack of transportation, this immigrate people were a-parted and were developing. The started building huge Houses with huge back yard their own well etc . They started living freedom and happily. Patidar's who immigrate from Charotar started living with weathers facilities. now they started touring Religious places. In 1840 to 1850 some Leuva arranged to travel Kashi - Vishvanath but at that time there was lack of transportation . Indian railways started in 1860 from mumbai to Thane, So if any one has to go to another place they has to usebullock carts. Some group of 75 to 100 Patidars went to Kashi near Ahmedabad they were welcomed by Imamshah dargah of Parina village Some of them stayed there & some of them went forward to Kashi. Patel community is very courageous, hard working & physically strong. They are very soft by nature & kind hearted.

During the rule of Harshvardhan in 631 A.D. one officer named `Akshapatlik ' was found in one of the writing and was also mentioned in many other writings. In many other writing the word Mahakshapatlik and Gramakshapatlik word was found. In `Prabandh chantimani' it is mentioned the place were the Political writings were made was known as Akshapatlik. In Solanki era's there was also a writer named Akshapatlik.

During the muslim rule in Gujarat around in 1412 A.D. to 1573 A.D. they used to appoint a person in a village who was the main servant of government and was known as mukhi. Mukhi means Mukhtyar in Arbi.

This Muki were known as Patlik, Akshapatlik & finally `PATEL' slowely the relatives of patel were also known as patel. before 1400 A.D patel community was known as `Kanbi'

The person who owe land is known as `Patidar' `Pati' is Sanskrit word & `dar' is a Irani word. So person who posses the land is known as Patidar.

Patel surname started in Gujarat before 300 years. During that period a man named Vir Vasandas patel in kheda district used to stay in Piplaw. He was having good terms with Aurangzeb. He used to collect taxes from Dhorka, Matar and Patlad taluka. In 1757 A.D . a community meeting of all ` Kanbi ' was organised in Piplaw. In this meeting the son of king Auranzeb named Bahadurshah was Invited. In this meeting Vir Vasandas Introduced a word "Patidar" insted of `Kanbi' in their Office. So Patidar means a person who is having Land.

During some last years all the patidars of Saurasutra, Kutch, Surat & Valsad used to write "patel" instead of patidar and sub caste as Leuva & Kadva patidar So, in whole Gujarat Patidar used to write "Patel" as their surname . Before 500 years all patidar were farmers. They were not having any business, services or any urban life style. They used to stay in villages and do farming. they all were equal and used to marry among all the sub castes . also ,they were happily living. All Leuva and Kadva patidar were used to give and take Girls from all around the Gujarat. Patidar were also loving their Religion and also loved their festivals which have been from many years.

IN 1750 A.D. Patidar of Gujarat used to stay in villages of Saurashtra, Kutch and Gujarat. Hardly 10% of villages out of 18,000 are not having cast of patidar. they have enriched the region of Gujarat but now they started immigrating from Gujarat to all over the world. following them some other castes of Gujarat also immigrated. They have made small Gujarat in Africa, Europe and America. The numbers of Gujarati increased so much that in the cities of Chicago , New York , London etc have started weekly news papers in Gujarati. they used to help all the communities coming from India. Finally , Patel community is courageous like Kshatriya, hard working , helpful by nature, lovable and soft hearted . The Various means of word " PATEL" can be known as " PURITY " P- means PERSEVERANCE, P- MEANS PHILANTHROPIST.
