Q: What software do you recommend for managing web sites?

We have several features to allow you the easy access to the files on your web site. There is your File Manager 2.0, which can be accessed through the URL, "yoursite.freeservers.com/cgi-bin/util/fm/wm". We also provide a great Quick Site Builder, which you can access at "yoursite.freeservers.com/cgi-bin/util/sitebuilder". Of course, you can use your own FTP software if you are familiar with how it works. We recommend either CuteFTP, WSFTP to manage your site.

Q: How do I get my site listed in the search engines?

You can submit your site individually to each search engine or pay a company to do the same to multiple search engines. We will submit your site to seven of the most popular search engines for free.

Q: What tools are available?

You will have available to use all of the following tools:
File Manager 2.0, Quick Site Builder, Site Copier, Guestbook, Form E-mailer and a choice of many different Counters, including a custom counter to create your own graphical counter.

Q: I'm having trouble using a specific tool. Where can I find more detailed instructions?

You can Search Our Solution Database by entering a keyword and you should be directed to the FAQ explaining more about the web tool you need help with. If you cannot find the solution you are looking for there, use the 3rd option to get advanced support from our Tech Support Team.

Q: How do I upload files like photos and graphics to my web site?

You can use the File Manager 2.0 or an FTP program to upload images to your site. All image files will need to be in ".GIF" and ".JPG" format to be seen on the Web. In the File Manager 2.0, use the "Browse" button to locate the files on your computer. Select the file and click "Upload" in your File Manager 2.0.

Q: How do I count the total visitors to my site, instead of just one page?

For determining the number of visitors to your whole site, rather than just individual pages, you should use our Traffic Statistics utility. You can access that utility from the User Utilities page at http://www.freeservers.com/cgi-bin/util/menu/tools/user_utilities/index.html.

Q: What can I do with ISML?

On FreeServers, you can use the ISML tag to automatically include the contents of another file on a web page. You can also use ISML to include the current date and time in a web page. ISML is also used to include a visitor counter. (Click here to see about adding a counter to your site.)

Q: How do I put forms on my page?

You can use an HTML editor or web page editing software such as Macromedia Dreamweaver to create forms on your web pages. However, forms must be processed by a CGI program. Since FreeServers does not allow users to upload their own CGI scripts, you must use one of our pre-installed CGI programs. Fortunately, we have a very powerful CGI called the Form E-mailer that you can customize. Click here to find out how to use the Form E-mailer.

Q: Can I upload files to my site without using an FTP program?

Yes, you can upload your files without using an FTP program. On the FreeServers TOOLS page, click on File Manager 2.0 under the "BUILD" menu to access your web site. In the File Manager 2.0 you can Browse for the files on your computer to upload to your site.

Q: Who should use the File Manager 2.0?

Everyone who has a fairly decent knowledge of building HTML from scratch should use File Manager 2.0. WebTV users should use Old File Manager. Those users without a proficient knowledge in HTML should use the Quick Site Builder.

Q: Will you transfer my files for me, or do I have to do it myself?

If you already have a site somewhere on the Web, you can easily copy and transfer all of your files in one easy step by using the Site Copier. If you need to upload files from your personal computer, you will need to transfer each of the files through an FTP program or your File Manager 2.0.
